Going to work to workout

Work Out

Employers can offer plenty of wellness programs and health checkups, some local experts acknowledged recently, but it’s still a challenge to motivate people to participate.

“We have the same issue, and we’re the health department. That should tell you something,” Mary McPherson, a program manager at the Washington County Health Department, said during last week’s Eggs and Issues session, sponsored by the Hagerstown-Washington County Chamber of Commerce.

McPherson was part of an eight-person panel that addressed wellness and workplace issues. And most of the eight said people can take small steps to make big improvements in their health.

For example, start striding up the stairs instead of riding in the elevator. McPherson mentioned one organization that made stairwells more attractive by decorating them with artwork, piping in music and posting reminders about the health benefits of using the stairs.

“It doesn’t need to be big,” she said of efforts to promote health. “Start really small. Have low expectations.”

Fitness “is part of our culture” at Hagerstown’s Hub Labels, according to Pam Kunkle. She’s the human resource manager at the company, which offers a fitness room, classes and other wellness opportunities for employees. But she stressed the label printer’s culture has been built one step at a time over the course of years.

She told fellow employers at the session that motivation “is going to be one of the most difficult challenges you’re going to have. … You have to keep at it. You can’t give up.”

Katherine Smith, representing the American Heart Association, said the ideas do not need to be complicated. Instead of taking doughnuts to the routine meeting, she suggested, take doughnuts and fruit. Instead of stocking soft drinks, provide soft drinks and water.

The idea, she said, is to provide people with opportunities to make healthier choices.

Panelists also talked about incentives employers can offer to boost wellness.

For example, Andy Bruns, president and publisher of Herald-Mail Media, said the company offers wellness screenings and checks. As an incentive, he said, employees receive insurance discounts for participating in the screenings as well as making healthy choices, such as quitting smoking.

Resources

The panelists detailed resources that are available to help people pursue healthier lifestyles.

• Bruns spoke about healthy washingtoncounty.com, a collaboration involving The Herald-Mail and Meritus Health. The site, which can be used by anyone, allows people to track their weight, blood pressure and exercise levels. It also offers information about health issues.

• Kunkle, of Hub Labels, said the company has been encouraging employee health for years. The company has a fitness room and helps offer classes, from workouts to yoga. A farmers market comes to the company to sell fresh foods.

• McPherson, of the health department, said the agency is working on a walking plan for the area. She said Washington County is home to many walking trails, including those in city, state and national parks. “We just need to get people out using them,” she said.

• Smith, representing the Heart Association, said the organization offers what it calls Workplace Health Solutions, a variety of tools designed to improve employees’ health. She stressed the importance of wellness programs, noting that “80 percent of cardiovascular disease is preventable.”

Hub Labels is Moving from Good to Great with Dupont™ Cyrel® Fast Easy Plates

Hub Labels is expanding on their continuous innovation philosophy by going from good to great with Dupont Cyrel® Fast Easy Plates. This new plate technology platform simplifies the prepress process, which results in increased productivity and consistency.

The immediate benefits to our Hub Labels’ customers can be seen from the examples below, the new plating system is able to produce a much more vibrant image, capable of picking up the tiniest details. In the example label, the honeycomb has a much more vibrant color to it and the gradients fade off gradually into the surrounding image. With up to 4,000 DPI, the image quality is unmatched. “I’ve been with Hub Labels for almost six years, the amount of technological advances we have adopted within the past few years is enormous. This new plate technology is another one of those advances and it will definitely help our customers make a visual impact in their marketplace,” notes the Graphics Supervisor at Hub Labels.

From the beginning in 1978, Hub Labels has always been on the cutting edge of quality, productivity and sustainability. This expansion is part of an on-going effort by Hub Labels to drive progress and innovation on the manufacturing floor.. Thomas Dahbura, President of Hub Labels, believes in continuously driving best practices and involves every single employee in Lean Manufacturing & visual management. As a Lean company, Hub Labels is always looking at ways to make improvements to their processes to create more value for their customers, the most recent example being the installation of Dupont Cyrel® Fast Easy Plates.

Dupont Cyrel® Fast Easy Plates provide many needed benefits to the Hub Labels production process. Featuring flat top dots, which are built directly into the plate, helps the job come up to color quickly. These plates also provide excellent solid ink density with reduced impression, no bounce and superb fade to zero. “As they should be, brand owners are very particular about color and their overall brand consistency. To help maximize color consistency for our customers, we had to run spot colors to get the results they were looking for. Now we are seeing these new plates quickly come up to color so bright and vibrant, we hope to eliminate this extra step in the near future,” notes the Purchasing Manager at Hub Labels.

With the installation of the Dupont Cyrel® Fast Easy Plates, Hub Labels also wanted to keep company wide sustainability goals in mind. This new workflow provides a superior environmental profile by eliminating all solvents and aqueous solutions from the plate room.

Hub Labels Expands Use of AVT 100% Inspection & Quality Control Solutions

IMG_3813

Hod-Hasharon, Israel & Hagerstown, Maryland, USA – Hub Labels, one of the most prestigious and diversified manufacturers of pressure-sensitive labels, linerless labels & direct mail pieces in the United States, is expanding its use of inspection and quality control solutions fromAVT, the world leader in print inspection, print process control, and quality assurance. The expansion chiefly involves AVT’sHelios, a market-leading solution for 100% inspection and quality assurance in label and narrow web printing.

For Hub Labels, the announcement not only represents trust in AVT’s inspection systems but also growth in its own overall business needs: After originally installing Helios on a pair of its labeling lines two years ago, Hub Labels is now adding the solution to three existing lines as well as two newly purchased ones. The uptick in overall output from the new lines, combined with the increased efficiency yielded by AVT’s solutions, will result in a sharp surge in production capabilities for the Hagerstown, MD-based manufacturer.

For manufacturers such as Hub Labels, the ability of Helios to immediately detect developing defects – thereby decreasing overprinting and reprinting – can significantly reduce waste and production costs. In fact, since its original AVT Helios installation, Hub Labels has clocked material waste as low as 2% even while running 400 feet of web per minute. The resulting boost to overall productivity and efficiency is often instant and dramatic; Hub Labels estimates its own output has risen an impressive 15%.

Lean Manufacturing Andon System

Andon LightsOur production team noticed a need for converting employees to signal and receive help during production. After doing some research into different types of equipment that would work best for our needs, they decided on Lean Manufacturing Andon. In manufacturing, Andon systems provide visual feedback to the plant floor. Andon systems indicate line status, show when assistance is needed (e.g. supervisor or maintenance calls), and empower operators to stop the production process for quality issues.

This new communication tool would:

• Bring immediate attention to problems as they occur in the production
process.
• Provide a simple and consistent mechanism for communicating
information on the plant floor.
• Encourage immediate reaction to quality, down time, and safety
problems.
• Improve accountability of operators by increasing their responsibility for
“good” production and empowering them to take action when problems
occur.
• Improve the ability of supervisors to quickly identify and resolve
manufacturing issues.

After deciding on the Andon system, the next step was to figure out how to create and implement this system at Hub. The exterior boxes were built out of wood and painted gray. Maintenance handled all of the mechanical wiring within the boxes and added the switches to each converting machine. There are two switches per machine, that way employees can signal if they need assistance from the Finishing side or the Shipping side during production.

Great job team for implementing a cost effective and time saving solution for our production team!

Hub Goes Electric with a Chevrolet Volt

volt

Hub Labels recently purchased a 2015 Chevrolet Volt to use as a company vehicle. The Volt is unlike traditional hybrid cars because we can drive on pure electricity for the everyday commute and seamlessly switch to gasoline for longer trips.

For less than the cost of a latte, we can fully charge the Volt and get an EPA-estimated 38 miles gas-free and it averages 900 miles between fill-ups. With the standard 120V charging unit we can fully charge the battery in about 10 to 16 hours.

In addition, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has named Volt a 2015 Top Safety Pick in its Small Car segment. With all of these great incentives, plus being environmentally friendly, the Volt is a great addition to Hub.
