Hub Goes Electric with a Chevrolet Volt

volt

Hub Labels recently purchased a 2015 Chevrolet Volt to use as a company vehicle. The Volt is unlike traditional hybrid cars because we can drive on pure electricity for the everyday commute and seamlessly switch to gasoline for longer trips.

For less than the cost of a latte, we can fully charge the Volt and get an EPA-estimated 38 miles gas-free and it averages 900 miles between fill-ups. With the standard 120V charging unit we can fully charge the battery in about 10 to 16 hours.

In addition, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has named Volt a 2015 Top Safety Pick in its Small Car segment. With all of these great incentives, plus being environmentally friendly, the Volt is a great addition to Hub.

“We learned through customer research that we have a great opportunity for both PACK EXPO exhibitors and end users in the North East,” says Jim Pittas, sr. vice president, Tradeshows, PMMI.

He adds that PACK EXPO East promises to bring world-class innovation and insights in packaging and processing for many markets, including, but not limited to, the pharmaceutical, medical device, baking and snack, beverage, food and personal care sectors.

“Whether your market is confectionery, baking/snack, pharmaceutical and medical devices, food, beverage, electronics or something else, PACK EXPO East will bring an exclusive focus on processing and packaging technologies, top-tier exhibitors and a customer-centric approach to operational needs. It’s everything you expect in a PACK EXPO show, located within 200 miles of a third of the nation’s major consumer goods companies,” says Pittas.

With this mixture of technologies, PACK EXPO East combines convenient and much-needed access to advanced, whole-line solutions. The show will also offer regional attendees an exclusive opportunity to cross-pollinate ideas between industries. Attendees will find the educational opportunities they have come to expect from PACK EXPO shows, including Innovation Stage sessions, on-floor education at exhibitor booths and activities in conjunction with packaging and processing educators.

“Philadelphia is an accessible and affordable destination for manufacturing professionals on the East Coast,” Pittas continues. “By hosting a PACK EXPO event here, we’re creating an opportunity for manufacturers to bring more team members to the show, so they can explore innovations on the line and new solutions that they’ve never considered before.”

PACK EXPO East’s high-caliber educational programming will address challenges in sustainability, food safety and automation, and networking opportunities to connect with suppliers and peers on important issues and trends.

Sleeving or full-wrap applications are effective at reducing the typical material weight of traditional sleeves while speeding up efficiencies. Popular for many years in the UK and Europe with over 12 billion+ applied annually, Ravenwood Linerless Labels and Sleeves bring high-end packaging solutions to the table with a variety of application styles, including:

Linerless labels provide all the benefits of self-adhesive labeling with improved efficiencies, volume applications and environmental advantages through their non-utilization of carrier backing paper.

Available in silicone coated paper, board or synthetic materials, standard Linerless labels deliver a semi-adhesive label format which partially adheres to pack through a series of technically placed glue strips. Labels faces are then supplied without carrier backing paper. Reel weight is therefore significantly reduced by up to 40%, meaning less weight waste, storage and reel changeovers.

As an extended pack format, Linerless also serves to deliver consistency on-shelf as well as increased surface area print to better service information and legislative requirements.

Benefits

  • Zero backing paper waste
  • 40% less reel weight compared to self-adhesive labels
  • More labels on a reel
  • Fully automated application speeds of up to 180 packs per minute
  • Fewer reel changes, less downtime
  • Consistency of format on-shelf
  • Increased surface print area
  • Tamper evident

2014 Going Green Business Award

2014_GGawardHub Labels Inc. of Hagerstown, MD received the Going Green Award during the 15th annual Washington County Business Awards at the Hager Hall Conference and Event Center on Wednesday, February 26th.

Hub Labels was recognized for the steps they have taken to integrate environmentally friendly operating practices and procedures into their business. These steps focus on reducing waste stream, recycling and education.

In 2012, Hub Labels became Project L.I.F.E. certified. Project L.I.F.E. is a program developed to enable Tag and Label Manufacturers Institute, Inc. (TLMI) members to find cost effective ways to help reduce their environmental footprint. As a result of the certification process, Hub Labels created a Project L.I.F.E. team that is charged with managing as well as implementing environmental projects and efforts.

In an effort to reduce waste and energy consumption, Hub Labels created Environmental Management Programs, which specifically target these areas. The programs have established standard operating procedures focused on reducing materials going to landfill and
reducing electrical consumption. In addition, continuous improvement goals are established and tracked annually.

Hub Labels began tracking waste, recycling, electricity usage and water usage in 2010. Since then, with environmental programs in place, improvements have been made based on the following:

  • Together, various recycled materials have equaled 348,663lbs for 2013.
  • Ink/toner/cell phone recycling began in 2013 through Evolve Recycling, which is zero landfill.
  • Between 2012 and 2013, more than 17,990lbs of plate material has been diverted from landfill through DuPont TR3 plate recycling, which started in 2012.
  • Solid waste based on paper usage was reduced from .493% to .382% from 2010 to 2012, which means more is recycled and less waste is being generated at press reducing materials going to landfill.
  • Electrical consumption went from 80.05 feet per kilowatt hour to 82.10 feet per kilowatt hour, or, overall reduced by 3% in 2012, which means electricity is being used efficiently by being able to get more throughput each kilowatt hour.
  • Water usage from 2010 to 2012 went from .001416201 gallons per foot to .001305688 gallons per foot overall, which means less
water is being used in production. With the implementation of the After Rinse Water Recirculation system in 2012,
14,495.7 gallons of pure water was saved for the year. As of September 2013, 13,348 gallons of pure water has been saved and more than 1,000 bottles of water saved with the implementation of a water bottle filling station on the shop fountain.

Hub Labels also promotes its Linerless product, which is better for the environment because there is no liner. These innovative labels do not incorporate a separate release liner (backing material) and are designed for high-volume manufacturing and processing line applications such as meat, poultry and seafood packs and trays, bottle wraps, cases and other retail packaging. Without a liner, the Linerless Labels are able to create a more cost effective solution that eliminates the environmental waste that thousands of tons of throwaway liner paper create when they are disposed of in landfills. Sleeving or full-wrap applications are effective at reducing the typical material weight of traditional sleeves while speeding up efficiencies.

The other two finalists for the award were Habitat for Humanity ReStore and Hempen Hill BBQ Bar & Grill. The Hagerstown-Washington County Chamber of Commerce and the Washington County Department of Business Development hosted the event.

There were about 152 businesses and people considered for the awards, which were narrowed down to 21 finalists. Over 530 people attended the black-tie optional event.
